We reached out to Bobby Medlin, CPA, owner and Executive Director of the firm, to ask a few questions about establishing an independent practice and staffing multiple locations.1. Establishing a firm of your own is, by itself, a huge undertaking. Offering clients the accessibility and convenience of multiple offices must add to the complexity of the business. Did you choose to open an office in Lake Ozark because it is an underserved area? Do you have any plans for further expansion?
We did choose the Lake Ozark area because of the need for good professional service providers in the area. We are always planning for finding ways to serve potential clients that need our assistance, including those in new geographical areas for us.
2. Has there been a time when your personal experience as a business owner has helped you offer better advice to your business clients? Or vise versa, have you been able to apply things you've learned working with other business owners to your own business?
As a business owner, I am constantly evaluating how we do business and I have been able to use that experience to help many clients find ways to become more efficient and more profitable.
3. Many college hopefuls are now looking at careers in accounting, and have a particular interest in establishing independent firms of their own. What advice would you offer to aspiring CPAs interested in establishing their own practices?
First and foremost, they should get education and training on how to run a business. Being a good accountant is not enough to ensure success in running a practice. They must know how to be the CEO of their own business. A good slate of business courses in areas such as management, finance, business law, and technology will prove to be very beneficial to the owner of a practice.
