A State By State Accounting Guide

PhD Degree in Accounting

The results of a study published in 2011 by the American Accounting Association's journal Issues in Accounting Education, show that a Ph.D. in Accounting can provide a positive return on the educational investment. The return is dependent upon several factors: leaving public accounting early to pursue private sector accounting opportunities, the length of time an accountant spends in the Ph.D. program, and the ultimate career path they take. While a position in academia through the pursuit of professorship is the obvious career choice once receiving a doctoral degree, there are also opportunities within industry and government to apply the level of advanced knowledge that comes with earning a Ph.D. in accounting.
