Do you have what it takes to be an expert financial planner? Although most CPAs define their success by their knowledge and experience, most of the time clients have a different idea of what makes a great financial planner. And as any financial planner can attest to, the client’s opinion is the one that matters the most.
If you want to earn the title (at least in your clients’ eyes) as the best financial planner in town, there are a few things to keep in mind.
Get to Know Your Clients
As most financial planners will agree, establishing and maintaining relationships with your clients are just as important as the skills you possess. The bottom line is that clients want to feel comfortable with their financial planner, and they want to be served by someone who takes the time to actually get to know them and not just their financial portfolio. Strengthening your relationship with your clients involves not only your technical knowledge, but your ability to take the time to get to know them and their personal needs and goals.
Leave the Industry Jargon at the Door
Your knowledge gives your clients confidence that you are providing them with the best advice, but talking in terms they simply cannot understand does little more than confuse them. Your ability to talk to them about any financial topic in terms and language they can understand allows them to make the most sensible decisions and no doubt makes them feel at ease, not only with you, but the decisions they make, as well.
Assemble a Great Team
Most clients understand that no one person can have a broad range of knowledge in everything from laws and taxation to insurance and investing. But what they do want to know is that you surround yourself with a team of competent professionals who can ensure that every area of their financial lives is overseen by experts in the field.
Go Beyond the Client’s Expectations
Being a great financial planner means finding out how often a client wants to receive communication and then meeting or exceeding that objective. It is important to be in touch with your clients according to their objectives, and that is accomplished through excellent communication. It is also important to let clients know that they can contact you at any time, regardless of the reason.
