More than Three Hundred College and High School Students Set to Participate in Annual Accounting Challenge

On February, 20, students from 22 high schools and four community colleges will participate in the 17th annual Accounting Challenge, which takes place at Southern Illinois University Carbondale.  The event, sponsored by the School of Accountancy in the College of Business, gives participating students the opportunity to win certificates and prizes that include $500 college scholarships for winners interested in attending Southern Illinois University and majoring in accounting. Over 300 students are expected to participate in the challenge, which will test both their knowledge and skillsets in individual and team environments.

The Accounting Challenge is scheduled to take place from 8:30 am until 1:00pm in the gymnasium on campus, which is located in the Student Recreation Center. The academic component of the event starts at 9:30 and the team competition starts at 10:30am, which will continue through noon.  The awards ceremony will take place at 1pm.

The academic portion of the competition will test the accounting knowledge of each student while the team competition will consist of a creative test that includes building contraptions out of common objects. The challenges are not announced beforehand, so participants have no idea what to expect, but in the previous 16 years, they have always been interesting, fun and fairly tricky, requiring the contestants’ full attention and focus.

In addition to certificates and scholarships, other prizes are being donated by local businesses and trophies will be awarded to contestants who significantly distinguish themselves from the others, demonstrate the best skill and most knowledge, as well as successfully complete all the required challenges. Top schools will also receive trophies, as well as bragging rights.

While the Accounting Challenge encourages healthy competition, the goal is to make what many consider to be a boring subject like accounting fun for students.
