5 Steps to Becoming a CPA in Georgia

Georgia is great for big business, so the enterprises that are on to that fact aren’t going anywhere anytime soon. And with all that big business comes a lot of accounting work for CPAs.

Georgia hits the top 10 in the U.S. News & World Report Top Business Environment rankings. That’s why you’ll find plenty of accounting opportunities at big traditional Georgia companies, including Delta Airlines, Coca-Cola, and Home Depot. But the state also has a lot of tech startups, taking advantage of a thriving high-tech community and the talent coming out of world class universities around Atlanta.

Hot companies like clinical research software firm Florence Healthcare, and fintech startup Greenlight, not only hire CPAs directly but have millionaires in their ranks that need expert accounting services too.

The steps in this guide will show you exactly how to become a CPA in Georgia.

  2. Take the Uniform CPA Exam in Georgia
  3. Gain the Necessary Experience in Georgia
  4. Get Your Georgia CPA License
  5. Continuing Education in Georgia

1. Get Your Education – Meet Georgia’s CPA Degree Requirements

a. Get information from Georgia’s colleges and universities that house accounting programs. Under Georgia State Board of Accountancy rules, a bachelor’s or higher degree and a total of 150 semester hours of college credit are the minimum requirements for CPA licensure in the state.

With the standard bachelor’s degree in accounting consisting of just 120 semester hours, going on to earn a post-baccalaureate certificate or master’s in accounting represents the most tried and tested way to get the 30 additional credits you need to become a CPA in Georgia. Many of these programs are available entirely online. You can also find specialized five-year CPA track programs that combine a bachelor’s and master’s curriculum to give you the 150 semester hours you need to meet CPA requirements in Georgia.

b. The Georgia State Board of Accountancy accepts all relevant degrees and credits earned through schools with standard national or regional accreditation from an agency listed in the U.S. Department of Education database.

If you attend a foreign school, your academic credentials must be evaluated. Contact NASBA International Evaluation Services to request an evaluation, the results of which will be sent directly to CPA Examination Services for final approval.

c. Meet Georgia’s specific CPA degree and curriculum requirements. Within your 150 total semester hours required for licensure you must satisfy the following credit requirements:

  • 30 semester hours of accounting courses above the elementary level
  • 24 semester hours in general business courses
